The overall aims and objectives of the English as an Additional Language (EAL) Department is to provide teaching support and opportunities for non-native English speakers of all levels as well as to improve and develop their English skills from complete beginners to advanced second language pupils.
For some pupils, this means supporting their language development to help them participate fully in the school’s academic programme. For others it means developing higher order reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
The EAL Department also helps beginners learn the ‘survival’ English they need to socialise with their friends at school, communicate with their teachers and take part in extra-curricular activities.
St George’s continues to support pupils as they become more advanced in English to develop their language skills to a proficient level. As a result, the department supports a wide range of pupils, from complete beginners to advanced second language learners of English.
