Dr John Knight to lead St George’s as Principal from September 2023

The Chair of the Board of Governors, Ms Flaminia Muratori, is delighted to announce on behalf of the Board of Governors the appointment of Dr John Knight as the new Principal of St George’s, effective September 2023. 

Dr Knight will join St George’s from the British School of Brussels, where he has held the role of Vice Principal and Head of Senior School for the past five years having joined the school in 2006. He studied Education and Mathematics at the University of Exeter, holds a Master's in Educational Leadership from the University of Buckingham, and earned his PhD in Education from the University of Reading with his thesis Square pegs in round holes: A study of student aspiration in a high-performing school environment. He has held a number of other roles at BSB and other schools in the UK, including IB Coordinator and Head of Lower School. 

Ms Muratori said: “Dr Knight brings a passion for education and places strong values on relationships in his leadership approach that underpins outstanding learning, evidenced not only by leading academic results but also by the value placed on wider learning. His aim is to foster a positive, supportive, and successful school culture. He is committed to inclusivity and to upholding the international spirit of our school, as well ensuring the holistic growth of our pupils and the continued professional development for our staff. I would like to thank all of the staff members, pupils, governors and trustees who participated in and supported the recruitment process.”

A message from Dr John Knight to the St George’s community

Married to Ann and a father to three school-aged children who will be joining St George’s in September, Dr Knight is a sports enthusiast, having run eight marathons for charity and played club rugby and football, as well as coaching school teams. 

Dr Knight will arrive in Rome in advance of the new school year. He succeeds Mr David Tongue, who will complete his fifth year as Principal of St George’s this summer. Mr Tongue will bid farewell at the end of the current academic year as he takes up the position of Principal at Doha College, Qatar.
