Celebrating Sporting Success

Over 100 pupils from the Senior School recently walked the Red Carpet at the Gala d’Oro.

An annual highlight on the St George’s calendar, the Gala d’Oro is an awards ceremony organised by the PE Department, bringing together pupils from across the Senior School who have participated in school sporting activities, whether as individuals or as a member of one of the school’s many sports teams.

Throughout the evening, a range of trophies and prizes were given to pupils whose individual accomplishments have stood out, in the areas team leadership and sportsmanship, and setting new individual school reports in their chosen sport. The diverse range of sports includes basketball, tennis, football, hockey, athletics, running and fitness.

The special guest speaker for the evening was Mr Carlo Mornati, World Champion and Olympic Silver Medallist in Rowing. He delivered an inspirational talk to pupils about his own journey to achieving sporting greatness. He follows in the footsteps of previous guest speakers such as Lucas Leiva (Lazio and ex-Liverpool footballer), Giancarlo Fisichella (Formula 1 Racing Driver), Luca Cordero di Montezemelo (Ferrari Team Manager) and Luca Paganini (St George’s Class of 2011, Frosinone football club).

Mr Chris Miller, Director of Sport at St George’s, said: “Each year, the Gala d’Oro gets bigger and better and this is a testament to the hard-work, dedication, and above all, incredible spirit of our young sportsmen and women. Active participation in sport not only improves the health and fitness of our students, it also serves to develop important skills in leadership, teamwork, and character-building.”

“Every pupil has dedicated themselves to meeting and exceeding their goals. Congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients on your well-deserved achievements!”
