SMT Biographies

Martyn Hales - Principal

Mr Hales (BSc.) took on the role of Principal of St George’s in 2008.  His knowledge and experience of the school and its community are prodigious, having arrived here in 1981 to teach Maths.  He has since held several senior positions at St George’s, including Head of Department, Head of Sixth Form and Head of Senior School.  Mr Hales continues to be remembered affectionately as a fantastic Maths teacher by St George’s alumni around the world.

Adam Oliver - Vice Principal & Head of Senior School

Mr Oliver (M.A. Hons, PGCE, NPQH) joined us in 2011 from Chosen Hill School, where he was part of the leadership team which led the school to its first Outstanding Ofsted judgement. His background has covered pastoral, curricular and extra-curricular leadership and his recent work has included leadership development and increasing the delivery of outstanding lessons. Mr Oliver teaches English.

Christine Williams - Head of St George's La Storta Junior School

The Head of St George's La Storta Junior School is Christine Williams (B.A, PGCE, M.A. Education).  Her previous experience includes VSO in Nigeria, EAL and Learning Support roles within the school setting, plus more than 20 years as a class teacher. Both of Ms Williams' children attended St George's and have since moved on to universities in the U.K.

Michael Barber - Head of St George's City Centre Junior School

The Head of St George's City Centre Junior School is Michael Barber (B.Ed Hons, FRGS).  Michael came to the role in 2005 and is a geographer by training and inclination. He was born in Uganda and lived in Australia and Zimbabwe as a boy. Having started his teaching career in Bristol, he now lives in Rome with his wife (who teaches at St George's Senior School) and three daughters, all of whom have attended St George's. 

Paul Ryan - Senior Deputy Head

Mr Ryan studied History and Sociology at Goldsmiths College, University of London, before completing a PGCE in History at the Institute of Education. He has been teaching for eleven years, the last six of these as part of leadership teams in South East London. His previous experience covers a range of both pastoral and academic leadership roles.
He joins us from the Harris Federation, where his responsibilities included overseeing the quality of teaching, professional learning, newly qualified teachers and initial teacher training. In his spare time he retains an ongoing interest in history, especially that of Tsarist and Soviet Russia. He skis, plays golf and watches a lot of cricket, although rarely at the same time.

Katherine Kida - Deputy Head of St George's City Centre Junior School

Ms Kida (Cert.Ed) has been teaching at St George's since 1978, so has great experience of the school and indeed of the profession.  As well as her role as Deputy Head, Ms Kida is a Year 6 Class Teacher.

 

Sarah Mollen - Assistant Head of Senior School (Sabbatical)

Ms Mollen (BSc. PGCE, M.A. Education) took on her current role in 2009, having joined St George's in 2004 as a Biology Teacher.  She has been teaching for over ten years.

Marco Gemelli - Assistant Head of Senior School

Mr Gemelli has recently joined the SLT as Assistant Head of the Senior School. He has taught Mathematics at St George's since 2002.
