Nothing is more important to us than the welfare and happiness of the pupils of the school. We have many tiers to aid this.
Pupils
The pupils of this school are a very happy bunch. Because this is a true International School, one thing is common to all of them: they are used to welcoming new pupils. We are constantly amazed at how quickly pupils fit in and have friends around them at St. George's.
Tutors
Each pupil has a teacher who acts as their tutor. They meet every day in the morning plus two lessons a week. They discuss issues at both the personal and the group level. The tutor keeps an eye on the pupil throughout the year. Tutors support their tutees and also challenge them when necessary.
Heads of Year
Sometimes problems occur when the pupil or the tutor needs help or guidance. The Heads of Year are experienced teachers who fulfil this role.
Our Referral System
We have a computerised referral system in which teachers add small nuggets of information about the pupils they teach - both good and bad - maybe a missed homework, or maybe a brilliant one. This is carefully confidential but available to tutors and Heads of Year so they can build up a picture of how the pupil is doing. Maybe the missed homework forms part of a bigger picture and might trigger the tutor to have a word with the pupil. Maybe a combination of referrals will persuade the Head of Year to phone the parents. We have found that so many minor pastoral issues are caught before they escalate into major ones.
May Week exemplifies St. George's ethos; it is not just about academic success, it is about building the character of the young people so that they are equipped to meet the challenges of the outside world, starting when they leave school and go to University. Click on the image to see more.
