STOP PRESS: Following the 2,500 Euro grant from the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), the Peter Ustinov Foundation has also granted the same amount. The money will go direct to Zambia to fund a laundry from the Orphanage and several smaller projects.
Every year the pupils of the school
choose
two charities to support - this year it is Cancer Research and a local
School for children with Downs Syndrome. These two charities change
every year but we give our permanent support, every year, to the Zambian
Orphans Appeal. A committed team of pupils and staff raise money and
awareness through the year and then every other year they go out to
Zambia to meet the Orphans, bring equipment and to run activities for
them.
For the pupils and staff involved, it is a truly life-changing experience. Mr Gilbert is the driving force behind it, and it is he and the pupils on the ZOA committee that put so much work in to make it all happen.

More about the recent grant
Through the ECIS, ZOA has been awarded a Sir Peter Ustinov Outreach Award of £2,550 (by the Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation) for the construction of a laundry building (with large washing machine) at the orphanage. At present, all washing of childrens' clothing and linen is done by hand. This new facility will greatly improve the efficiency and hygiene of the laundering process and free up the Carers so that they can assist the children more with other activities (like homework). The building will also incorporate ironing facilities as well as a staff washroom and toilet.
