Music is just as important in our Junior Schools as it is for the older pupils (see Senior School Music).
Children in the Junior Schools have two class music lessons per 6-day cycle. In the Early Years and Key Stage 1 we explore the elements of music through singing, movement and percussion work. Our practical work continues into Key Stage 2 where it is enhanced by detailed listening and the study of various historical and theoretical topics. In Key Stage 2 we learn how to play the recorder and how to compose music of our own. We sing in assembly every week and try to choose songs that are meaningful and linked to the topics that we are studying in other subjects areas.
At the end of the autumn term both Junior Schools produce a Christmas production which involves every child in the school working in collaboration with the music teachers, class teachers and staff from other subject areas. The Dragon School and Key Stage 1 usually work together whilst Key Stage 2 normally prepares a show of their own. Parents and friends are warmly invited to attend the final performances which take place during school hours in the penultimate week of the autumn term.
In addition to class music lessons, St. George’s children have the opportunity to study a musical instrument with visiting instrumental specialists. These lessons operate on a one-to-one or small group basis and take place during the course of the normal school day. Junior School students are offered private lessons on pianoforte, violin, viola, cello, flute, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, drums, guitar and singing. Private instrumental lessons in the Nomentana Junior School are subject to interest. St. George’s is a major centre for Associated Board music exams and when students are of the appropriate level they are encouraged to take these internationally recognized qualifications.
Both Junior Schools run a Junior Strings Programme which offers children in Years 1 to 3 the opportunity to benefit from free group lessons on the violin. These are designed to enhance the children’s overall musical experience and to give them the opportunity to try out the violin in a relaxed and ‘child-friendly’ atmosphere. The aim is that they complete the programme with a firm grasp of the basics and a desire to continue into private instrumental lessons and the various musical ensembles further up the school. This system has been very successful over the years and many of our senior orchestra students began their studies in this way.
Both Junior Schools have a Junior Orchestra and Junior Choir who come together with the Senior School ensembles to produce three major concerts per academic year. Our first performance is in November for the day of Saint Cecilia, the patron Saint of music. Our other concerts coincide with our Christmas and Easter celebrations.
