St. George's School

St George's Alumni Association (back)

An introduction to our new Alumni Coordinator

Some of you Renato Iannace photomay remember me from my days as a student at St George's - the school was then called “St George's English School, Rome”.  My name is Renato Iannace and I have just been appointed as the school’s Business Development Manager.  I have only just come back to “where it all began in the early 1970s” (that must have given away my age), yet I already feel well-integrated back into the St George's community; as ALUMNI, however, we remain part of this big happy family for life.

One of my main responsibilities will be to oversee the development of the ALUMNI network and to build on the great work carried out by Peter Doyle and his team.  St George's has extensive valuable resources, not least us: current pupils, the parents of the school, ALUMNI, current and ex teachers and members of staff, and all those who are in some way closely associated with St George's.  Synergies can be created to the benefit of the St George's community.  I therefore welcome your ideas, suggestions and comments, however peculiar they may seem at the onset.  I also look forward to receiving your support, where necessary, for the benefit of the St George's community.

Please feel free to contact me on +39 06 30860055 or by email on renato.iannace@stgeorge.school.itI hope to see you at forthcoming events organised by St George's.

A message from the Founder of the Forum Legion, Jawed Khan

Well the BIG ONE took place over 4 days last June with about 400 legionnaires and accompagnatori converging on Rome from all corners of the world. Those of you who were unable to make it were missed but also missed out on what many have described as an unforgettable reunion. The highlight for the older alumni was the visit to the Via Salaria site, which housed the school till 1968.

It was a very satisfying feeling that 3 decades of efforts (since 1976) to keep the Forum Legion active had culminated in reuniting so many classmates - many had not seen each other since leaving the school 30 – 40 years ago!

So we move into the next half-century.

Firstly, on behalf of all alumni, I would like to welcome Renato Iannace as the new Alumni Coordinator and wish him all the best and our full support in his endeavour to take the Forum Legion to greater heights. For the immediate future the new alumni specific ICT tools that the school is about to put in place will enable the legionari to network more efficiently, and that is no mean thing.  One important fallout I foresee, will be the ease of organising reunions, eg. 10, 20-year after, as well as local ones in various different countries.

The school has taken a big step in integrating alumni in its mainstream. Now the ball is in our court – what do we plan to do with it? I am sure there are numerous ideas and suggestions about projects large and small that the legionari could promote and carry out for the benefit of the school, the alumni and the community at large.

Allora fatevi avanti o miei prodi.

With best wishes for peace and prosperity.

Jawed

April 2008

It is now over a year since the school’s decision to take a much more active interest in its Alumni Association and my appointment as its coordinator. Time, therefore to take stock, to see what we have accomplished and what are the next priorities.

What you are looking at is our most visible tangible achievement; our first alumni website. It is continually being expanded and is kept up to date almost daily during term time. Its registration link has been the main conduit for the amazing increase in enrolment from a base of just over 200 in January to more than 1,300 now. Thanks are due at this point to our secretary, Amal, who is ever willing to take the initiative, to Richard, our innovative website manager and his wife, Lucy, our hard-working web content editor.

The main raison d’etre of any alumni society is to facilitate contact between its members. Reunions are clearly the best way of effecting this and so far we have had the first summer reunions at the school at the end of June and one in London at the beginning of November and a revival of the Boxing Day evening at the school. All were thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by those present. I have also met many alumni in the US during my visit there this autumn. You can view photos of these on the Reunion page.

Time seems to be accelerating as we race towards the end of June and our Jubilee celebrations here in Rome. Plans are well advanced and we have had over 200 firm bookings. St Georgians are returning from all over the world and it should be such a wonderful experience…….so don’t miss it,  as like Haley’s comet,  the next big one is another 50 years down the line!

So many of you have written about your great memories of St George’s and how it really was something special. It still is a great school; still continuing to send out into the world men and women, like you, who have experienced first hand what it is to live in a tolerant society amidst different races and religions.

Would that the world had a million St George’s!

Peter Doyle
