Learning Support

The Learning Support Department

The Learning Support Department is run by Trevor Bestall, the Director of Student Support. His team supports pupils with learning difficulties and other issues, in both the two Junior Schools and the Senior School, and this support takes different forms.

Pupils may receive in-class support in some of their lessons, one-to-one or small group tuition, or a combination of these, depending on level and type of need. Pupils with behavioural and emotional difficulties may also receive support from us in the form of mentoring and monitoring.

Parents of young people at the school who have more complex problems may be recommended by us to seek additional help from external specialists, such as Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and Counsellors.

Assessment referral

It is also possible for teachers to refer children for assessment within the school, in order to identify difficulties in more detail and define strategies for teachers and parents to support them in their learning. Strategies for teachers to use to help these pupils' learning are provided for staff in the form of Leaning Support Profiles.

While the support service at St George’s will always endeavour to include young people with a variety of needs, we also acknowledge that some young people may have difficulties at a level which may not be possible to manage adequately within the school, and in these rare cases the Principal of the school will be consulted. In such cases the school may ask for additional funding to support the needs of these students.

Cognitive Abilities Tests (CATs)

Cognitive Abilities Tests (CATs) are administered by the Learning Support team. All pupils sit these tests in years 3, 6, 9 and 12. CATs help to identify young people who are possibly experiencing learning difficulties. Results of these tests are published confidentially to parents and to teaching staff.

Additionally, new students are CAT tested on admission and strategies to help the students' learning at home and at school are generated.
