School Environment

There is always something going on during any typical day at St George's, whether fundraising for charity, celebrating local culture, a student exhibition or any number of off-timetable activities, all of which contribute to a uniquely vibrant buzz that is noticeable as soon as you walk through the school gates.

An international school in an Italian setting

St George’s is a truly international school with our many nationalities enriching all that we do. While we do have families from around the world, in school the common language is English and this is the language used in lessons apart, of course, from our Language lessons! Naturally, we do value highly our Italian environment and all students will follow an Italian programme tailored to their level of expertise in the language.

Settling in

As we do serve the international community, pupils at all stages of the school are very used to welcoming newcomers and we pride ourselves in the way we support pupils, parents and staff who are joining the school. From the Principal who has the first discussions with new families to a pupil’s class buddy, we know how important it is to settle quickly and feel happy in a new environment and we will work with every individual to make sure they become involved in school life quickly. There are a number of events, such as the Principal’s Barbeque and Parents of St George’s Coffee Mornings, early in the school year to help families get to know the St George’s community.

The School Day

In school, most tutor and teaching groups range between 15 to 20 pupils although at IGCSE and IB teaching groups can be smaller than this. We make sure that tutor groups have a balanced mix of individuals so that everybody can expand their horizons by learning from others around them.

The school timetable has a two -week rotation, with the weeks labelled ‘Week A’ and ‘Week B’, Monday to Friday. There are 30 teaching periods per week. Each period is either 50 or 55 minutes long. The day starts at 8.45 with registration with your tutor and teaching starts at 8.55. Break follows period 2 at 10.35 for 20 minutes and there is a staggered lunch with the Junior School going at 11.50, and the Senior School from 12.45. The day finishes at 15.30 for the Junior School and 15.35 for the Seniors.

Students are then supervised onto their buses if they are using school transport. During break and lunch pupils are able to socialise around the school grounds, use the school Tuck Shop or take part in club activities but apart from Year 13 they are not allowed to leave the premises. Staff are on duty during these times to supervise and be the first port of call if any issue arises. During the day pupils experience a full range of subjects and other events as our sample timetables indicate.

In the Junior Schools pupils are based in their classroom although they will have specialist lessons such as Music and PE in specialist areas. In the Senior School pupils do move round the buildings going from lesson to lesson and it is important that every individual has a suitable bag to carry what they will need during the day. Lockers are available to keep books and possessions in school.
