Music Department

Music makes a kind of liquid link between the study of languages, literature and the other arts, history, and the sciences – joining them together in the outer world of feelings and relationships and the inner world of the imagination.
Dr Robin Holloway, Composer

Music plays a vital role in the life of St George's, with the majority of pupils involved in music-making, both as part of the curriculum as well as during the everyday life of the school.

Students take music lessons until the end of Year 9 at which point the subject is offered as IGCSE and International Baccalaureate examination courses. Students regularly move on to continue their musical studies at university or music colleges around the world.

All pupils are encouraged to participate in instrumental and choral activities which rehearse at lunch time and after school.  Among the many music ensembles on offer, we are particularly proud of the school Choir and the school Orchestra, both of which undertake regular overseas tours.  The Choir has a number of off-shoots which include a Chamber Choir of the more select singers and both male and female Barbershop groups.  Other extra-curricular groups include the percussion ensemble, jazz band and there are separate string, brass and woodwind ensembles which complement the work carried out in the main orchestra. Performances take place in impressive concert venues in and around Rome.

A dedicated team of highly experienced visiting music teachers deliver individual instrumental and vocal lessons to pupils throughout the school.  There are numerous opportunities for pupils to perform, ranging from small informal recitals to high-profile whole-school concerts.  Our own Young Musician of the Year competition gives all pupils the opportunity to perform in public and there are regular performances in school assemblies.

The man that hath no music in himself, nor is mov'd with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils.
Lorenzo, The Merchant of Venice

Each year the music department undertakes a major Concert Tour to another European city. Last year we made a very successful tour to Prague and this year we are planning a tour to Vienna.

Each Autumn term, our inter-house Music Competition is held, in which the whole Senior School takes part.  The standard is very high and preparation always taken very seriously! For the parents there is also the opportunity to take part in our Festival Choral Society which presents one concert each year.

We currently have a number of Rock Bands which practise regularly, receive expert tuition and perform at our annual Charity Rock Concert, as well as at many other events both in and out of school.  Regular concert trips allow pupils to hear leading artists from the world of Jazz and Classical music performing in the fine concert halls of Rome.  Pupils also have the opportunity to experience high quality workshops and concerts in school.
